Custom Paving Stone Patios and Walkways in Edmonton, Built for Alberta's Climate

A paving stone patio is only as good as what's underneath it. In Edmonton, clay soil and freeze-thaw cycles expose every shortcut taken during installation. We build surfaces that stay level, drain properly, and don't need to be reset three winters from now. Retaining walls often pair with patios and walkways for sloped lots; we also install sod and finishing work so your yard is complete. We serve Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, and St. Albert.

  • Step 1: Design and Measure We confirm layout, slope, drainage direction, and material selection before work begins.
  • Step 2: Excavation and Base Build We excavate to depth, call utility locates, and compact in lifts with geotextile between soil and gravel.
  • Step 3: Set, Finish and Walk-Through We lay, cut, and lock every paver with polymeric sand and edge restraints, then review the finished surface with you.
Base & Installation
What We Build and How We Install It

How Serene Builds a Paving Stone Surface That Stays Level

Settling, shifting edges, weeds pushing through joints. Every one of those problems traces back to installation, not the product. Our process starts underground.

We install 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base with woven geotextile fabric between the native soil and the gravel. Pavers sit on 1 inch of bedding sand, get cut tight to the edges, and are locked with polymeric sand and edge restraints staked every 12 inches. When the ground heaves in spring, individual stones flex and can be reset. Poured concrete cracks and stays cracked.

Smaller patios and walkways typically take two to three days. Larger patios with borders and steps run four to six days. Driveways five to seven.

  • Woven geotextile fabric between soil and base
  • Polymeric sand joints lock pavers and resist weeds
  • Edge restraints staked every 12" on all perimeter runs
  • 3-Year hardscape warranty on all installations

Choosing the Right Paving Stone for Your Edmonton Project

The material shapes everything: the look, how the surface ages, and how it holds up through Edmonton winters. Here's what we work with most.

  • Concrete Pavers — The most popular choice for Edmonton patios, driveways, and walkways. Durable, available in a wide range of shapes and colours, and well-suited to freeze-thaw conditions when installed on a proper base.
  • Brick Pavers — Dense, naturally stain-resistant clay pavers with a classic look that suits traditional and heritage-style homes. Colour runs through the material so it holds up over time without fading.
  • Natural Stone Pavers — Granite, slate, and limestone bring natural variation and texture that manufactured products can't replicate. Best suited to higher-end projects where the character of the material is part of the design.

I know there are many landscaping companies out there, but Steve and his team truly stands out. They did an excellent job on our new build landscaping as well as constructing our new fence. The team was very professional, polite, responsive, and their pricing was fair. Highly recommended!

I was lucky enough to find Serene construction landscaping through a Facebook group, the team showed up and walked me through the process and explained where the costs were coming from. They were all extremely professional and knowledgable. They worked like dogs for three days to get my lawn in pristine condition. It looks absolutely amazing.

I would have no worries, recommending Steve and his team for any landscaping project.

  • Paving stones in Edmonton cost $35 to $45 per square foot depending on access, pattern, and borders. We provide clear quotes after a site visit.

  • A small patio can take 2 to 3 days, while larger layouts with steps or retaining walls can take 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Yes. We set slope at about 2% away from structures and use base prep to prevent pooling.

  • Yes. We use high-quality polymeric sand in all joints. It hardens after activation to lock pavers in place, prevent weed growth, and discourage ant hills.

  • Yes. We call Utility Safety Partners (formerly Alberta One Call) before we dig so underground lines are marked and the work is done safely.

  • In Edmonton’s freeze-thaw climate, paving stones are often superior to poured concrete because they’re flexible. When the ground heaves in spring, stones shift individually and can be easily reset. Poured concrete is prone to spider-web cracking here. That damage is permanent and expensive to patch. With pavers you get a surface that can move with the frost and be repaired in place.
